Benjamin Moore’s Bunker Hill Green for Abe’s Room

Ikea Ribba book ledges and Benjamin Moore's Bunker Hill Green

Some people always manage a fun pun in their post titles. I LOVE puns, but I seem to be terrible at them. And really good at dry but descriptive titles.

It’s so rare that I come up with a wonderful terrible pun, in fact, that I actually remember my two best ones, even though they’re both from college. Ready?

So one time I saw a lost dog sign, and I said, “oh look: someone lost their dalmation. He should be easy to spot.” Ha! I am HILARIOUS. Or I was. 20 years ago. Really, though, a lost dalmation pun pretty much writes itself. It’s possible everyone else who saw the sign made exactly the same joke. And I hope those people found their dog.

And then another time one of the two colanders in the apartment I shared with my friend, Suzanne, broke, and it seemed like the one remaining colander was always dirty or in use when I needed it. “Suzanne,” I said, “I think only having one colander is putting a real strain on our friendship.” Yep. Pretty great.

Puns have nothing to do with today’s post. I’m going to practice more creative titles, though:

It’s Not Easy Being Green….unless you’re Abe, in which case it’s totally easy because it’s your favorite color

….okay, so that’s all I’ve got, because then I got sort of distracted and couldn’t think about anything except frogs. Maybe boring titles are okay, after all.

Hey! We painted Abe’s room! That’s what this post is about!

I was originally planning to keep Abe’s room the same color, Benjamin Moore’s Newburg Green, as we transitioned it to his National Parks big kid room. I actually couldn’t figure out any other color that would work, in fact, except maybe white. And his room has just one window all the way over on one side, so I think the other half of his room doesn’t get enough natural light for white to work well in there. White walls in a two year old’s room seems a little dangerous anyway.

I’m not sure why green didn’t occur to me right away. Green makes complete sense in a heavily nature inspired room, after all. And I love green, even though there’s not a ton of it in this house. I told a friend the other day that I feel like the blue and green sides of my personality are always battling it out. AND, as of a few weeks ago, Abe is obsessed with green. “I love green,” he tells us, over and over again. Also the number five.

Then I came across this fabulous boy’s room over at Whaling City Cottage and immediately fell in love with Bunker Hill Green.  (I think I found the room searching for rooms with the Hudson Bay blanket I’m hoping to get for Abe’s room. Check out the room….I love pretty much everything about it).

It’s sort of perfect, too, because Bunker Hill is a National Park Service site.

MEANT TO BE.

Dave went to the Benjamin Moore store to get the paint, and the guy had never heard of Bunker Hill Green. He mixed it up and told Dave, “this is really green.” It is. I was kind of nervous when I took the lid off myself, and I’m not one to shy away from bold paint colors. But the kid loves green.

And now that it’s on the walls, I’m very pleased with it. I think it is a little brighter than I was anticipating, but I also think it will work well once everything else is in the room. Plus, I mean, he’s two. I don’t know that I’d want it in my dining room. Although I might. Hmm…..

We used Kilz latex primer over the old paint, then two coats of the Bunker Hill Green. We bought a gallon of paint and used up every last drop of it, and there are still a couple of spots that need touching up, so we’ll need to go get another quart at some point.

I was in a hurry to get Abe’s new bed in here, and then, for some reason, I was in a hurry to paint the walls. But I’m not necessarily in a hurry to finish the room. I’d like to finish before the year is over, but we’ll probably be working on other projects at the same time and fitting this room in as we can.

Right now it’s looking pretty spartan, with some of the furniture moved out and the pictures off the walls. Our master bedroom, on the other hand, looks like this:

So we need to fix that. Some things will be going back in his room. I have new homes in mind for some things. And some things we’ll have to say goodbye to, which will break my heart of course.

I think the next thing that needs to be done in Abe’s room is reworking how everything’s organized. The big toy shelf will likely be leaving (and probably getting a new life in our planned garage workshop) to make room for a dresser (since the bed is on the wall where the dresser used to be). And to compensate for that we’re planning to add a bunch of shelves to make his relatively big closet work a little harder for us.

I have three different dressers I’m considering in here, and I’ll probably do a separate post and collect opinions about those.

And I need to decide if we want an armchair for reading in here. I thought I did for sure, but then I realized that we can also just sit on his bed together and read stories. I like the idea of a chair, but it takes up a lot of space in a relatively small room. Thoughts?

Benjamin Moore’s Bunker Hill Green for Abe’s Room — 22 Comments

  1. i LOVE the green and i loved that inspiration room when i saw it, too! i think green has made a huge comeback in the last year as a wall color. i also love your puns and am always up for a good pun! i wish i had one now… i am feeling sort of lame that i don’t.

  2. Abe has good taste. I was just thinking the other day that I wish I would have painted the nursery green. This is an excellent shade too. I think it’s easy to go wrong with greens and that’s why I run from them even though it’s one of my favorite colors. Want to race to see who finishes their kid’s room first? It really could be a neck to neck battle.

    • Green is very tricky! I had to fight with my camera for the pictures, too–it kept trying to make it look too yellow, and I was all, “no, camera! that’s NOT how the wall looks!” I have the advantage in the race to finish the kid rooms because I don’t have to do mine while getting more and more pregnant 😉

  3. Gretchen! This is gonna be awesome! I also had the green panic until I got all the art up on the walls. Funny enough I was searching for vintage National Park posters for my son’s green room too. But ran out of time so just raided our basement and my stash of weird art. Good luck – can’t wait to see the finished room!

    • Thanks, Erin! And I’m kind of glad you didn’t get around to getting the national parks posters or it totally would have looked like I’m just copying everything you did ;). Also, I love your stash of weird art in there 🙂

  4. What a fun color! I’m constantly struggling against my girls’ wishes for BRIGHT walls…but maybe I should just give in 🙂

  5. You’re good at puns. You just don’t know it.

“Right now it’s looking pretty Spartan”. I along with every other Michigan State fan reading this caught that one!

    Go Green!

  6. I loooooove this color. This is sort of the color I want to use in our bathroom and Ryan thinks I’m insane. Totally showing him this. And then Im using the strainer colander pun and it’s all good.

  7. I was actually thinking about what I was going to do with my rocker in Beckett’s room once he’s in a big kid bed. I just don’t see how it will work in there with a real bed, but I’m super sad about it. I’m glad you have to make these tough decisions before I do!

    • Fortunately, I’ve never particularly liked the rocker in Abe’s room (it’s just a cheapy poang from ikea)….so there’s no nostalgia involved here. Just practical decision making about whether I want a chair at all 🙂

  8. That is a very cool green color. I like it. how big of an armchair would you be trying to get into the room? We’ve got very small bedrooms and I can’t imagine trying to fit a chair into any of them, but if you can it’d probably be really nice.

    • I actually have one in mind that’s elsewhere in the house at the moment…it’s smallish but not tiny. I’ll have to see how everything looks when I get the rest of it done…
