Finishing the Master Bathroom FOR REAL: Where We’ve Been and Where We’re Going

Hey, did you know that time actually slows down when you’re painting trim? Like it absolutely feels like you will be doing it for the rest of your life. True story.

So I can’t show you any finished trim in the master bathroom until I dive into the time warp again a few more times, but it IS happening. This painting of trim. This finishing up of the longest master bathroom makeover in the history of the universe.

I call it finishing up, but the end feels both close and impossibly far away. On one hand, the tile was really the big, big project, and we finished that forever ago (like, seriously, more than a year ago). And also it feels almost done because the whole plan has been complete in my head for a very long time, too. It kind of started to seem, in fact, like I should be able to manifest the finished bathroom into being from the very lifelike vision in my head without needing to actually, you know….DO all the stuff.

(This line of thought is bringing to mind a Kurt Vonnegut story. I thought about recounting the plot of said story for you, but then I thought that that would a. be boring and b. spoil the story if you haven’t read it. “More Stately Mansions” from Welcome to the Monkey House).

But anyway, since it’s been a long time since the last bathroom update (and since I’m stalling until the trim is painted), I thought it’d be a good time to review what we’ve done so far in their and then take a look at what we have left to do.

So here’s where we started:

Our first project was ripping out the old and sort of broken shower door:

Then tearing up the carpet, after months of talking about it:

Then we tiled! All by ourselves!

We took down the old, kind of messed up, builder grade mirror:

….and replaced it with a gallery wall of mirrors (after painting that wall black):

And, finally, we did a quick update with some spray paint and fancy light bulbs to our vanity light, rather than replacing it:

See? Doesn’t that seem like a lot of things?! Doesn’t it seem like we should be all finished now?

Anyway, that’s how it feels to me.

Yet we are not.

So here’s what’s left to do in this last big push to get the bathroom finished already!

*paint the rest of the walls (hey, we already did that!)

*finish painting trim and doors

*paint cabinets and add pulls

*move dresser upstairs

*shelf project

*replace sink faucets

*accessorize! (light switch covers, towel racks, shower curtain, etc)

*new rug?????

*stuff on walls

*replace broken glass in plant stand

*buy and attempt to keep alive plants

….and I think that’s it? Some stuff has already been ordered and is on its way. Some stuff has not, but I have an idea of what I’m getting. Some stuff I’m stuck on. Like a shower curtain. Some stuff I know exactly what I want, but I probably can’t get it without a magical influx of funds (see: beautiful antique runner).

I’m not crazy enough to give you an actual timeline on this, but I will say that I’m reasonably determined not to tackle any other big projects until this room is finally finished.

    • Thanks, Gwen! Yeah–the bathroom is sort of stupidly big. It’s a mid 80’s build house, so I can’t quite figure it out…I guess our builders were ahead of their time!

  1. I LOVE the mirror wall! And I hear you about painting trim…I am in trim painting hell myself right now. Looks great!

  2. I feel you on the painting trim. That’s a pretty impressive list of projects completed. Makes me want to get going on all of our builder-grade bathrooms!!

  3. You have accomplished so much already my friend! The space looks so amazing!! And I can not wait to see it progress!!! Keep up the hard work! I got tired just looking at everything you have done so far!!! Happy week you! Nicole xo

  4. For the keeping plants alive: we sometimes buy the clearance orchids that they always seem to have at Kroger for our bathroom. They tolerate a fair amount of neglect and like the humidity. They’ve worked out surprisingly well, given that we only remember to attend to their needs during breaks between semesters. Pretty much any plant we have, indoors or out, has a high tolerance for neglect, now that I think about it.

    • Orchids! Fancy; I would have thought they’d be hard to keep alive, because of all the fancy. Thanks for the tip πŸ™‚
