Kids’ Rooms Bedding Updates: Target’s Pillowfort

Originally I was going to get this post up on Monday, so this part I’m doing first where I’m all, “hey–hope you had a good Easter weekend!” and then self-indulgently post a few adorable Easter kid photos was going to seem more timely. Anyway, I hope all of you who celebrate had a great Easter and that all of you without qualification had a great weekend. We spent time with family and managed to get in our egg hunt just before the rain started:

No pictures of Ari because he was too old for egg hunting. Sniff.

The day before Easter I was fretting about how Abe didn’t have an Easter outfit at all. So I went into my bin of clothes that I keep for sentimental rather than practical reasons and found this little romper that I actually made with my very own hands back when Milo was a toddler and I took a sewing class (it didn’t stick). And it fit Abe perfectly! Crisis averted! Abe loves it. “It’s my ROMPER!” he says proudly. “A romper is a type of overalls.”

But what this post is REALLY about is a couple of small updates to the kids’ rooms. The same kids who are still little enough for hunting Easter eggs, specifically. All the updates involve Target’s new Pillowfort line, but I should make it clear that this is not a sponsored post. That’s not even an affiliate link back there, because I set up Target affiliate stuff awhile back, but now I can’t remember how to do it and I’m too lazy to figure it out again.  It’s just that I really love the Pillowfort stuff and it’s sort of like they designed it with me in mind, as someone with kids with a national parks themed room and a forest themed room.

I’ve never been thrilled with the bedding in Milo and Gus’s room. I grabbed the comforters on clearance when we first moved in and put up their wall mural, and I’ve been casually on the lookout for replacements ever since. Old comforters:

So when the Pillowfort stuff came out and was 20% off, I grabbed a couple of these new comforters from the “Explorers Escape” collection. I wasn’t sure how the grey would work, since there’s so much brown in the room, but it turns out it’s a very warm gray and I think it goes nicely. It’s reversible; I put a different side up for each kid:

A few other notes about the room, since we haven’t revisited it in awhile:

I can’t show you the other side, because we’re in the midst of a massive cleaning/decluttering in here. Do all 12 year old boys have a mysterious pile of random crap under their beds? And an inability to understand the words, “your room isn’t really clean if you still have stuff under your bed”?

I keep thinking they’re going to outgrow this room before long, but they show no signs of getting tired of it. They sit in those hanging chairs to read every single night (and they’re holding up great despite constant use). I’m still hesitant to invest much time or energy into making changes to the room as it is now, though, since 10 and 12 year old boys can be fickle. I would like to get bamboo blinds to replace the curtains that are in here right now, but aside from that I’m planning to keep things as it for now.

The change in Abe’s room is super subtle, but it might be the one I’m the most pleased with. Before:

And now:

Dramatic, isn’t it?!

Okay, so I used to have just a soft, inexpensive gray blanket on his bed. It looked okay (as you can see, I didn’t leave much of it showing when I made the bed anyway), but it was annoying because it wouldn’t stay put. The texture made it slide all over the place. So when I was ordering Milo and Gus’s new bedding, I couldn’t help but grab this triangle quilt at the same time. And I LOVE it.

Also, I always feel compelled to talk about how hard it is to get a true representation of the green in here. But I think I’m getting better at it (and that my new camera is better at it than my old camera). Anyway, the last photo above pretty much nails it, I think.

I think finishing Abe’s room is going to be our big project for April. Because April is a busy month for us, and it’s really not THAT big of a project. We just have a few more things to do and buy in here, and we can call it done. And then spend all of the less busy May cleaning and organizing our garage. Sigh. SO much more excited about Abe’s room. But, while I’m not excited about actually cleaning the garage, I am very excited about HAVING a clean garage. So there’s that. Anyway. Another Abe’s room update coming next week!

Kids’ Rooms Bedding Updates: Target’s Pillowfort — 16 Comments

  1. The rompers were the first thing I noticed. I understand the sewing class not sticking, because I totally hate sewing, but I do it anyway because I Want Things MY Way.
I have nothing to say about the comforters except that they’re nice, but I’m glad the swing chairs, and everything else, are holding up well and continue to be enjoyed. I know I’d be awfully pleased with that room, but I’m 63 and possibly less fickle.
I can say nothing about Abe’s bedding except “That bear!!!” Love that pillow, and any bedspread that brings it out is good with me.
My Inner Librarian wants to know which Robert McCloskey book is behind Where the Wild Things Are. Make Way for Ducklings? What with the bear, Blueberries for Sal would be appropriate, though.

    • It’s actually an anthology of a few different stories :). But we do have separate copies of Blueberries for Sal and Make way for Ducklings.

  2. WOW. I love both of those rooms so much. They are so so good. I am fo course immediately also drawn to the buffalo print above Abe’s dresser. I am sure you already shared where it is from… but once more ?

And how much hair does Abe have now. OMG he look fantastic and so BIG. How did that happen. Love the Easter loot pictures 🙂

    • Thanks, Katja! The buffalo is from World Market (I bought it awhile ago, so I’m not sure if it’s still around in the stores)

  3. OK, this looks normal. I’ve tried twice to comment on the paint sprayer post, saying I love the color and Abe’s color coordination, and it’s making me want to re-paint everything I’ve ever painted, and then it wants me to log into Facebook, and when I choose Guest my comment never appears. Thought I should let you know somehow.

    • Ugh….I put the regular comment box back on the other post. I’m supposed to turn them off and use the company that’s sponsoring the post’s comment box instead, but they’re going to have to get it to work right if they want me to do that!

      • I just found this post from a Pinterest search for bedrooms with green walls. I know it’s been a while, but do you remember the name of the green paint in Abe’s room? And I’m guessing I won’t be able to find another one of those blankets, but was that Pillowfort from Target too?

        • It’s Benjamin Moore’s Bunker Hill Green 🙂 . and which blanket? the black one with triangles? it was Pillowfort. the one on top of that is a vintage wool blanket I got on ebay. HTH!

Like all human bloggers, I love comments :)
