Where that giant light fixture ended up: more bathroom progress

A very long time ago, I posted a picture on Instagram of this light fixture:

….and then I said nothing else about it for months. Until now! It’s in my master bathroom. And, actually, it’s been there since Thanksgiving, but I’m just now getting around to telling you about it. It’s also still crooked, but I got tired of waiting until we tried to fix that and decided to post now, de-crooked-ify later.

My friend Kristi found this light (and its twin, which lives at her house) at the thrift store for $10.10 and texted me a picture to see if I wanted it. Umm, yes! Duh. Of course I did. It’s HUGE, so I wasn’t sure if it would work in the bathroom. But then I was like, “I have a stupidly big master bathroom. What’s the point of that if you can’t hang a stupidly big light fixture in it?”

One corner of it needed a little repairing, so Dave made an attempt at soldering. I will not post the pictures of that because it was very messy. But it doesn’t show when the light’s hung up!

You can see the old light here (sort of….you can see the two of them in a row there; both sort of antique bronze (?) boob lights):

Dave says that eventually he’ll write up a whole post about switching things out, because it was not without its complications. But for now you just get to see the glorious (crooked) result. In my master bath inspiration post, I wrote, “I want a SUPER fancy light to replace the boob light thatโ€™s smack in the middle of the room.” Mission accomplished, my friends:

It’s not really too big to fit through the door like it looks in that picture. Perspective. But it is big.

We replaced the other light with this:

Over at Interiors by Kenz, Kenz posted that she had bought this light for her nursery; it was just the sort of thing I was looking for, so I picked one up at Home Depot the next time we were there. Copycat, I am.

So! Two out of three light fixtures taken care of. One to go, and I have a plan for that one.

What else?

I bought a shower curtain:

It’s greener in real life than I expected, but I think I’m okay with that.

And here you can get an idea of our progress (or lack thereof) with tiling:

Carpet is up. Baseboards are off. Dave has mostly finished cutting the backer board (which he didn’t enjoy nearly as much as I would have expected, given that it looks like a big Tetris game to me). Next up is attaching the backer board and then on to the actual tile! Any month now.

  1. I was wondering where you put that light. We have 2 exactly like it over the island. They aren’t installedโ€ฆof course not why would they be I mean we were supposed to close in December so makes total sense why our lighting that’s been purchase since before I had Beckett isn’t up yet. It’s so pretty I love it in the bathroom!

  2. Same hereโ€ฆI was wondering where it ended up! And I actually can’t believe how big it is. I so love it it, now even more than before because it is big. Looks so good.
And that shower curtain is on my list. I have been checking it out for a while. It’s so cool! Might still get it for the kiddos, let’s see!

    • Yeah, I’m not positive whether I’m going to like it in the finished bathroom yet, but I figure I can always move it down the hall to the kids’ bathroom if I don’t want it ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Just wondering with that floor layout – do you do your reno planning in ACAD or Sketchup, or on graph paper? Or are you a free spirit who can wing it as you go?

    • I asked Dave and he said, “oh. I could have done that. That probably would have been a good idea.” ha. first time tilers here, remember!

      • Actually I asked because I’m having a hard time seeing how all our stuff will go together and wondering what you do to visualize. I’m starting to wonder if we should call in a designer.

But yeah – it would have made laying out that board a little easier. ๐Ÿ™‚

        • ah, I see….we actually measured and sketched out the new nursery the other day (just on paper, like old times) with the idea of working on furniture placement. But I realized pretty quickly that I really need to see the stuff in the room and be able to physically move it around to figure out where I want it all.

  4. That fixture is rock star!!!! (I have the second one too!) Love it for so many reasons!! And you are plowing forward at an awesome pace! Can’t wait to see those floors! Happy day to you!!!

  5. Oh that shower curtain! I was planning on buying a similar one made by Kraken, but this is so much prettier (and I have a coupon on UO). Is the white a bright white or a creamy white? Your bath is going to be awesome…

    • Thanks, Meg! The white is bright white….I think the green looked bluer on UO’s site than in real life, but maybe I just wasn’t paying enough attention ๐Ÿ™‚
