About Me

Hi, I’m Gretchen; thanks so much for stopping by.

We call our house the Boxy Colonial because it’s….well….kind of boxy. And a colonial revival. It’s in the north metro Atlanta suburbs and was built in the mid 80’s. We bought it in the spring of 2012. It was a foreclosure that had been sitting empty for two years, and it needed a lot of work and lot of love. This blog is where I talk about all the house stuff we do, mostly, plus sometimes about kids and dogs and cats and travel and random things I’m interested in.

Here’s a goofy picture of me and Dave. I’m married to him:

Dave is a high school math teacher who also enjoys making things out of wood. He doesn’t enjoy tiling at all, but he’ll do it sometimes anyway, because he’s pretty great that way.

We have four boys: Ari, Milo, August, and Abe. Here they are (along with the dogs, Rory the terrier and Fiesta the beagle):

When I’m not blogging or doing house stuff, I homeschool those boys up there, foster dogs, and go to the thrift store.

If you’re new here, you might want to check out our house tour or my shiny new project gallery (still a work in progress)…..there are tabs for both of them up top there. And if you like what you see, I’d love it if you’d sign up to have posts delivered by e-mail, or maybe follow me on Instgram, Facebook, Pinterest, or Twitter.

  1. I just came to your blog because I saw about the Ekorre chairs, but I had to comment. I have a son August, nickname Gus, too. Milo is my nephew’s name and Ary (pronounced like Ari) was my grandmother’s nickname. 🙂 We also have a very similar farm house table, except that ours is a bit longer!

    • That’s so funny! I don’t know that we’ve ever run into another August/Gus (in real life….I know of a few online), which is a little odd since I think it’s the most popular out of my three older boys’ names 🙂 Anyway, thanks for the comment….clearly you have great taste in names 😉

  2. First time reading your blog due to Hometalk where the spotlight was on your Mom’s house ~ awesome decorating ~ huge kudo’s to your Dad, Mom and Stepdad on this house ~ looks amazing

  3. I saw your basement redo on apartment therapy and wanted to see what else you were working on. I live in Lawrenceville, GA and will soon be releasing our fourth son, Arlo, into the world. It was amusing to see the same or similar wooden robots, legos, toy bins, books, Dr Who references, video game posters, etc. in your home as in ours 🙂 Of course, your home is much more put together than our split-foyer fixer-upper!

    • Thanks so much for stopping by! We got some joking suggestions that we should put Ari and Milo together and name our third kid Arlo 🙂 Congrats on your fourth boy–it’s a lot of fun!

  4. First time reading a log. Is that the correct term for blog part? Clover topic got my attention not the usual how to paint with chalk. Anyway, love your sense of humor and the science lesson. Also your non box in a box thinking speaking somewhat geometrically. I love hippies and Mr. Rogers, wont you be my neighbor.

    • Haha! Thanks so much for stopping by, Sheryl! I do have a chalk paint post around here somewhere, but it was a long time ago 😉

  5. I stopped by because I too live in a boxy colonial and homeschool four boys in Georgia. (Though I’m half done since the boys are growing up.) We are just starting some renovations on our colonial and I’m looking for idea to stay true to our house’s character but put our own stamp on the interior.

Like all human bloggers, I love comments :)
